Magnetic Island is located just 8 Kilometres from Townsville, the largest regional City in Queensland . Townsville has all the facilities that you would expect from a bustling Regional City . Tourism is an integral part of the infrastructure of Townsville with Magnetic Island being the major draw card. Many locals use magnetic Island for their cheap weekend getaways.

A fast Catamaran service operates 16 services a day to the Island making it one of the most accessible Islands in Queensland .

Magnetic Island is the only island on the North Queensland Coast with a delightful blend of untouched National Park, a resident population of about 3,000 and a variety of holiday resorts.

Although in the Tropics, the Townsville area is in a rain shadow which makes it the sunniest city on the Queensland coast ( Magnetic Island averages over 320 days of sunshine per year). Just twenty minutes by fast "Cat" across Cleveland Bay from Townsville and you could be in what many consider Paradise !

More than half of the Island 's 5,184 hectares is National Park, with Mt.Cook in the centre rising to 497 metres. Huge granite boulders are softened by tall Hoop pines, eucalypt forest and small patches of rainforest.

Where the rocky headlands meet the sea many secluded beaches have been formed, some may only be reached on foot or by boat.

There are 24 kilometres of walking track through the park with many spectacular lookouts. The National Park is a haven for wildlife, like rock wallabies, possums, koalas and a wide variety of bird-life.

The range of activities available on the Island is both wide and varied. Whether young or old, seeking active pursuits or relaxation, there is a selection for everyone.

To really see the Island you need to stay a few days at the very least, laze under a coconut palm on the warm golden sand and relax - then plunge into cool, clear, blue water. If you come only for a day, then you will probably be planning your next holiday here.

The yearly average maximum temperature is 28.7 degrees Celsius and the minimum is 19.5 degrees Celsius. The chart below shows the weather pattern more clearly, it includes the monthly average temperatures, the daily average hours of sunshine per month and the rainfall.

These figures were compiled for Townsville just 8km away, but because of the sea breeze, the island maximum temperature is about one degree cooler than the mainland.

Being an Island there are a multitude of water activities available and new experiences to be had.

On the water you can sail, jet-ski, canoe or fish while in the water you can swim, snorkel or scuba dive.

Sail - sailing catamarans for hire, also sailboards, surf skis, canoes and aqua bikes, or water-skiing. Yachts can also be hired to enjoy a relaxing day in a quiet bay.
Jet Ski - tours around the Island on Jet-Skis will give you an exhilarating adrenalin pumping experience.
Kayaking – relax on the water while from the quiet of your kayak, exploring beautiful bays, you will have the chance to see dolphins, turtles, coral reef fish and sea eagles.
Fishing – guided tours take you to the best fishing areas around the Island where you can relax with a line and catch succulent reef fish.
Snorkel and scuba dive - Located within the waters of the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park , Magnetic Island has a wealth of interesting dive sites, whether diving from the shore or a boat. The many fringing coral reefs that surround the Island will give you the opportunity to experience the wide variety of marine life and colourful reefs while snorkeling. If scuba diving, you can experience the underwater life of the reef and also explore the many “wrecks” around the Island .
Swimming - The waters around Magnetic Island are warm (winter average 23 degrees Celsius - summer average is 28 degrees Celsius) and relatively shallow, so are perfect for swimming. From the shore, entry is from the many sheltered, gently sloping beaches which are easily access by road and there are also several well lit areas for night swimming.

Wildlife on Magnetic Island is abundant with a large numbers of colonies of Koalas living in the National Park and within the residential areas of Magnetic Island . The Island supports around 100 species of bird life, the most prevalent being the Bush Stone Curlew and the Rainbow Lorikeet.

To experience the wildlife in its natural habitat you can explore the 14 walking tracks that will take you through the National Park and also give you access to secluded Bays.
